Before sandblasting, the titanium bar appears smooth and shiny. This is the raw, untreated state of the metal. However, to achieve optimal bonding with the PMMA, this surface needs to be modified. Sandblasting achieves this by blasting tiny aluminium oxide particles at high pressure onto the surface of the titanium bar. This roughens the surface, enhancing its ability to bond effectively with the PMMA layer that is applied later.
This process specifically targets the upper side of the titanium bar, the part that interfaces with the PMMA. Meanwhile, the underside—the part that fits snugly inside the prosthetic framework—remains untouched and smooth. This meticulous approach ensures that while the bond is maximised where it is needed, the fitting surfaces retain their precision for a perfect fit.
Why Sandblasting Matters
The main reason for sandblasting is to increase retention and bonding strength. Titanium and PMMA are two very different materials; without a properly prepared surface, they wouldn't adhere optimally. Sandblasting creates tiny grooves and textures on the titanium surface, allowing the primer and PMMA to grip effectively. This results in stronger durability and stability of the full-mouth prosthetic, which is crucial for the long-term success of the dental implants.
Additionally, the roughened surface allows the primers applied afterward to penetrate and settle into these micro-grooves, enhancing the bond even further. This is what helps our implants withstand the daily pressures of chewing and biting, ensuring that they remain secure and effective for many years.
