Over two billion cups of coffee are consumed every day around the world. For many people, it’s the first thing they reach for in the morning - kickstarting focus, energy, and productivity.

But how much do we really understand about what caffeine is doing inside our bodies - including our oral health?

Dr. Nitesh, GP at 21D, regularly sees both the positives and negatives to coffee in clinical practice. The truth is, coffee isn’t inherently “good” or “bad”, and certainly not something to fear. But like many things in health, the impact lies in the dose, the timing, and the individual themselves.

In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the relationship between coffee and our overall health - so you can sip with confidence.

The Benefits of Coffee

While coffee often gets criticised for its caffeine content, it also has several well-documented benefits when consumed in moderation. It’s worth noting that many of these benefits are most closely linked to black coffee, without added sugars or syrups.

Rich in Antioxidants

Coffee is one of the largest sources of antioxidants in many people’s diets. Antioxidants help reduce oxidative stress in the body - a process linked to ageing and chronic inflammation. Inflammation plays a role in many long-term health conditions, including periodontal (gum) disease, so reducing it where possible can support oral health and overall wellbeing.

Improved Alertness & Mental Focus

Caffeine is a stimulant. It works by blocking adenosine, a chemical in the brain that makes you feel tired.

The result? Increased alertness, improved concentration, and a temporary boost in mental performance. For many people, this is the primary reason they drink coffee - especially first thing in the morning or during an afternoon slump.

However, the effect is temporary, typically lasting a few hours depending on individual tolerance.

Physical Performance Boost

Research shows that caffeine can also improve physical performance. It stimulates the nervous system, increases adrenaline levels, and can make exercise feel more manageable.

That’s why many pre-workout supplements contain caffeine. In fact, a simple espresso may provide a similar performance boost - often with fewer additives than commercial pre-workout products.

Again, moderation matters.

The Social & Psychological Element

Coffee isn’t just biochemical - it’s behavioural. Meeting someone for a coffee encourages social connection, which is strongly linked to improved mental wellbeing. Compared to alcohol-based socialising, coffee can provide that same sense of connection without the downsides associated with regular drinking.

The Downsides of Coffee

While coffee has various benefits, caffeine is still a stimulant - and too much can create problems.

Jitters & Palpitations

Excess caffeine can cause shakiness, feeling on edge, and even heart palpitations.

Tolerance varies from person to person. What feels fine for one person may be too much for another. If you start feeling lightheaded, shaky, or overly stimulated, that’s usually a sign you’ve had one too many cups.

Disrupted Sleep

Caffeine has a half-life of around six hours, meaning that half of it is still circulating in your system six hours after consumption. For some people, its effects can last even longer.

This is why drinking coffee late in the afternoon can interfere with falling asleep or reduce the overall quality of sleep. Even if you feel you “fall asleep fine”, caffeine may still impact how deeply and restoratively you sleep.

Poor sleep doesn’t just affect your energy levels. It also affects recovery, immune function, and inflammation regulation - all of which are important for maintaining healthy gums and supporting healing after any dental procedure.

As a general guide, limiting your last cup of coffee to early afternoon can help protect your sleep cycle.

Dependency & Withdrawal

Caffeine is technically a psychoactive substance, and with regular consumption, the body can develop a degree of dependency.

If you skip your usual coffee and notice headaches, irritability, fatigue, or feeling slightly unsettled, these may be mild withdrawal effects. This doesn’t mean you need to eliminate coffee entirely, but it is worth being aware if your body has become reliant on it to function normally.

Moderation reduces the risk of this cycle developing.

Digestive Irritation

Coffee stimulates acid production in the stomach. For some individuals, this can trigger heartburn, acid reflux, or general stomach discomfort.

In clinical practice, it’s not uncommon to see patients whose reflux symptoms improve simply by reducing their caffeine intake. Coffee can also stimulate bowel activity, which for some people may lead to digestive upset.

If you regularly experience stomach irritation, reviewing your coffee intake may be a sensible first step.

A Note on Teeth Staining...

Coffee is also well-known to stain natural teeth over time due to its dark pigments and acidity. While this is largely cosmetic, it’s something to be aware of.

For patients with full mouth implants, prosthetic materials are designed to be more stain-resistant than natural enamel - but maintaining good oral hygiene, including rinsing, remains essential to protect the implants and maintain the clean, shiny appearance of your prosthetic.

So… Should You Quit Coffee?

The short answer is no.

Coffee isn’t something you need to eliminate - coffee can be part of a healthy routine when consumed in moderation. For most people, one to two cups per day is very reasonable and unlikely to cause issues. Once intake reaches three or four cups, especially strong coffee, the downsides - poor sleep, jitters, reflux - may start to outweigh the benefits.

It’s important to note that everyone’s tolerance is different. The key is to listen to your body.
